This is not the normal "nest" thermostat, it's the nest E

There's only one generation of Nest E. However it did come out after the 3rd gen Nest but not better, just FYI.

From what I can tell, in Los Angeles, both DWP and SoCalGas are giving rebates for this model - $75 and $50, so practically free.

For what it's worth, I bought this about 6 months ago and love it. Really need another for the upstairs unit.. as far as differences from my understanding the screen is the only difference, functionality is identical to 3rd gen NESTS

Picked one up on their last sale. SoCal Edison has up to $125 if you sign up for power save days which just alerts you when you can save money by raising the thermostat temp in the summer. In other words, free Nest.

The screen isn't the only difference. The regular Nest has the option for different pages like weather, forecasts, inside temp, calendars, etc. Nest E will only show you the inside temp unless you go up to it and click to the main page to see the outside temp.

The 3rd gen nest supports more complex heating/cooling setups where the Nest E does not.....along the lines of having radiant floor heat, with a forced hot air stage as a quick warm up or if the programming realizes the radiant isn't bringing temps up fast enough.

For most people the Nest E is plenty, large homes with lots of glass etc....the 3rd gen is the way to go.

Fwiw the electrician I work for put in 20-30 E's this year, an maybe a 6-7 3rd gens.....

I put one in my apt and if it weren't for the extra 45 bucks for an Aube relay to make it work with line voltage electric heat, I'd put a second one in my bedroom....
