as you would guess by the price, this model is getting long in the tooth. it's Android 5.1 (Lollipop), and does not have an official upgrade to 6.0 (Marshmallow). some specs:

CPU: T-Shark 2A Quad 1.3GHz
Display: 7.0" TFE WXGA 1280 x 800
RAM: 1.5GB/ STORAGE: 8GB

you can expand the storage with a MicroSD card, but since adoptable storage is not an option with this tablet, it's only good for media, not apps, and 8GB fills up fast. good tablet for watching videos, but not so good for apps.

How does this compare to an Amazon fire HD7 or HD8?

Android 5.1 Lollipop? Can it be upgraded to at least 7.0?

No, bootloader is locked and samsung doesn't really support this tablet anymore.

probably equally crappy as the HD8, they both seem to have a quad core 1.3GHz CPUs (don't know if it's the same CPU though).

It's really sad that the Insignia 7" tablet I got the same time this released has had android 6.0.1 since the beginning of 2017. Come on Samsung! Get with the programming :/

Will this work as a good chromecast device? Open box Excellent for $63.99 from Best Buy via eBay with 6% ebay bucks. Not too bad.

This tablet has the power down problem - the device would power itself down unexpectedly.

I have this tablet and it is painfully slow. 8GB does fill up pretty quick. Added an SD card, but when you can't put apps on it really isn't much use. We picked up a few Amazon fire 8 tablets on Prime Day last year and they blow this out of the water. I side loaded google play onto them very easily, so kids very happy w/ youtube for kids.

For some reason on this tablet we have trouble with youtube for kids as well. It stops working after a while.

One thing to note is that Google is restricting the Play Store to the point that it might not work on the Amazon tablets (they used to be *really* easy to hack to get it on them). Not sure if it's going to be the case, but might be something to note if you're looking for a new tablet.
