Been watching and searching for a trunk mounted rack for a while and found this had dropped in price by @ $10...All other retailers around $35...

nice deal! I got one that is 5 years old. I wonder if I need to get a new one because the old one, the cable might break anytime soon or the nuts got lose?

The cables only break if they're left out in the weather for an extended periods of time and the UV starts breaking down the plastics. Just check for frayed straps. This is the usual failure. Plus check on the foam bumpers that rest the assembly against your car. If they come apart while the bike is mounted the whole assembly will bounce around and damage your car. Regarding any bolts, you should be able to just tighten them down.

I've seen some bike mount deals for cheap no name brands on here and some of the comments said get an Allen one instead.

This one good enough for a single mountain bike that will last more than a year?

Also, is this model known to cause scratches or dents with light (weekend) use?

Will definitely cause scratches / Dents unless you are extremely careful with installation and also use extra padding at some of the contact points.

How bad are these things on the paint of the car? I'd love to be able to bring my bike places, but I don't want to end up with areas of my trunk where the paint came off.
