Did they raise the prices beforehand to break even with these discounts?

Maybe some, not all. They normally raise prices based on vendor-specific market demands. In addition, they cannot alienate non-prime customers if they raise prices. The whole point of this promo is to get more people signup for Amazon's new Prime membership ($20 more than it was before) and to increase store traffic .

i have the app but with the latest update all it does is show a map of WF stores around or lets me send a message to WF customer service... that's it.

Check your app permission and allow it to access your location. In addition, make sure you set up your location accuracy to "High" in location setting.

They have lowered prices on like 9/10 door buster style items to lose money to offset items sold vs transactions.
Like they have wild caught shrimp for $9.99 a lb but now u enter for that you grab milk other veggies etc

We have one a block away wife loves it but i only support if its done smart vs upcharging on stuff like annies mac n cheese.. i get that at costco or stop n shop but WF has it for $2.99-3.99!!

Not sure how anyone affords to shop there. Their salad bar is like $8.99/lb. Cheaper to go to a restaurant.
