Not sure if that was a shot at Gwyneth Paltrow or Goop, but if you've worked on a car before and tried to clean your hands with regular soap you'd see how valuable this stuff really is.

I used to buy waterless hand cleaners like this to use after working on a car or equipment to get the grease off my hands -- even when I had access to water. But I read a tip in multiple forums that a lot of people and mechanics use Dawn Dish Soap (the blue stuff, the same as they use to remove oil from birds affected by oil spills) and that it works just as well or better, if you have access to water. I've been trying that lately and it seems to be true. And if you don't have Dawn, then try whatever liquid dish soap you have on hand and it'll likely work almost as well. Here's an interesting article [npr.org] about Dawn and why it's good at getting oil off of birds and people's hands.

Of course, if you're out in the field making repairs and don't have access to water, then Goop and Fast Orange type products are nice.

No, it's mainly to get oil and grease off your hands after you've been working on your car or other machinery. Don't believe it kills any germs.
