I don't see why you couldn't do that but you might want to tear the top a little bit so it doesn't pop when it expands.
And BTW this is a great price as the lowest I have gotten these is $1.55 in store.

Yes, they can. Toss them in, unopened. Takes around 10-12 minutes.
