Lowest price ever on the AUS8 version of this very popular folding knife.

https://www.amazon.com/Ontario-Kn...0013ASG3E/

Edit: $17.04 only lasted about 30 minutes. Now $23.99, which is still next lowest price in the past year.

$23.99 is still the lowest price in the past year -- well, except for $17.04, which was available for all of 30 minutes. Big Grin.

Great blade, hands down the best budget knife around. I own microtechs, Benchmades, etc. Yet I always carry my RAT. Cheap enough I don't have to worry about tearing it up, but made well enough that I never have. The Aus-8 sharpens easily and will get scary sharp also.

Favorite knife of all time for EDC. Ordered 5 at $11 each earlier today and order was cancelled.

I own this knife and have to agree that it's a little big for edc. However, this knife has the best unassisted deployment of the blade than any other assisted knife I own, and I own quite a few. The deployment is so smooth you would think it's speedsafe without the resistance.

How does the AUS 8 edge hold up compared to the D2? I have the Rat 2 in D2 and its been awesome. Have cut a couple of hundred cardboard boxes with it in the past month and haven't needed to sharpen it yet. Only ran it across my kitchen honing steel a couple of times.

Thanks. I'll pass on this AUS-8. Sick of cheap knives that can't hold an edge.

LOL I've never seen the RAT described as "a cheap knife that can't hold an edge". Go to Youtube or Bladeforums and search for "Ontario Rat" and you'll be hard pressed to find negative reviews of either version. I'm not a knife guy at all so I chose the RAT as my first purchase because from everything I've read it's damn near impossible to beat at this price point. Apparently the D2 is a better steel and will hold an edge longer, but it's harder to sharpen, too -- and the D2 costs about twice as much as the AUS-8. I considered getting the D2 but at this price the AUS-8 was too good to pass up.

I think you're right. Aus-8 is comparable to cheap 440 steel.

You'll like it as a first knife, but don't be surprised if you eventually want a better steel. Difficulty sharpening a better steel really should be a non issue
