Thanks for sharing.

Relevant question: If I am interested in enough mulch to fill a 500-square-foot backyard, from where should I buy it? Are these deals for one bag at a time at the Home Depot and Lowe's as good as it gets?

Thank you,
Tofu Vic

You'll get better quality mulch buying it in bulk from a landscape company but probably won't save much money depending on how many yards you get delivered. A lot of people prefer to have it in bags for the ease of putting it down especially around plants or shrubs. If you get it delivered in bulk you first have to shovel it into a wheelbarrow and then place it where you want either by dumping it or shoveling it back out.

Is Home Depot also doing the 5 bags for $10 this Memorial Day weekend?

Thank you for an excellent answer that provided me even more valuable information than I requested!

This is a pretty good deal! Better than HomeDepot's 4 bags for $10 deal.

Sorry for the dumb question but would you be able to plant small plants under this mulch?
I have a section next to the sidewalk that the city put small pebbles/rocks years ago. Just wondering if I can throw some mulch over the pebbles and put some small plants or do I need soil as well?
Not trying to spend so much money.

alot of tree trimming companies will delivery mulch for free in many cities just go to their websites. It may just be generic color and you may not get it until they are in your area, but if its not an immediate need, might be an option.

In my city, mulch is free. You just need to go scoop it up yourself. Check with your city services.

The coloring fades fast with all of these mulch bags. I buy bulk from the bigger landscaping places. Ask what they charge for delivery fees. I use to lay out a massive large tarp. My orders take up the entire back dump truck with 9 yards. Luckily they can backup to it and dump. So from there, it's a good day of exercise with wheelbarrow. Shoveling it sucks. Two person job. I had to build an elevated huge 3/4" plywood platform where the dump truck could unload. And on the other end I could push chips into a wheelbarrow. Now I rent it out!

Best time to buy bulk from landscape places is late fall. They are shutting down and want to unload mulch and make anything they can at that point. I have paid some very low prices, but the mulch isn't colored and isn't any particular type of tree. No pretty beaver tooth slivers. Just call and haggle with the landscape dealers in fall. They will deal on anything. Even small amounts.

Lowes Coupons net

I get at least a year of good color out of this brand. Personally, I think it looks good the following year as well but it does fade a bit by then. I started off with about 40 bags to cover the area I needed. Each year I buy around 15 bags to touch up areas. I get the bags as then I can simply carry them where they are needed and dump them out. No need to create a pile and use a wheelbarrow or anything like that. I then use the plastic bags as garbage bags around the outside of the house.
