"Here is the world-famous novel of Japan that is the earliest book in James Clavell's masterly Asian saga. Set in the year 1600, it tells the story of a bold English pilot whose ship was blown ashore in Japan, where he encountered two people who were to change his life: a warlord with his own quest for power, and a beautiful interpreter torn between two ways of life and two ways of love."

I think I read it 3 or 4 times BEFORE the mini-series was made. The extended version of the mini-series, starring Richard Chamberlain, is awesome. the condensed version sucked big time. This book inspired me to move to Japan for 3 years. In fact, I was living in Southern Japan when they were filming Clavell's "Gaijin" and was an extra in it. Was in a scene with the Japanese guy from "Mr. Baseball". My wife and I had 2 children there. Would move back in a heartbeat. I guess the point is....this is one of the best books of all time.

This is a very long book, but is solid story telling from start to finish.
Can't recommend it highly enough.

I get it, this book changed my life too. I read it for the first time when I was in 6th grade and I've reread it at least a dozen times more. It instilled in me a thirst for cultural knowledge and an intense desire to travel. I've since been to dozens of countries on four continents, have lived in lots of places all over the world, met my wife abroad, etc. I speak three languages now, and i was so blown away by the story in Shogun that i became an amateur Japanese historian. I've read dozens of history books on Japan and on this period in particular.

Of course, I've read all of Clavell's books, in fact I read them all before I finished high school. Each served as a basis for further research on their respective time periods and geographies. More than that though, they helped develop my particular worldview; people are inherently good. Many times a nameless enemy is motivated by noble or virtuous intent and once you start to crack that nut, the world becomes a very different place. It's hard to hate up close and central to Clavell's novels, and in fact his personal belief, is that cross culturalization creates knowledge, leading to understanding, ultimately leading to tolerance.

Side note: never expected to have a slickdeals post of this nature but there you have it.

A little tough to get at first, but I loved this book as well. It's like 1100 pages and I think I burned through it in a week. Just couldn't put it down.

I'm not a "reader" but I read this while vacationing at a friend's house. It is an amazing novel and as stated above, you will not be able to put it down. Cool thing about it is it actually teaches the reader some history to boot!

One of my favorite books and honestly my safe choice when things are out of control and I want to remove myself to another place for some time.
