I've never inspected these stands before, but are they reinforced more than a typical bookshelf to hold the massive weight placed on top? I expect this item to still be pressed fiber board rather than real wood. I've had a 30 gallon on top of a pressed fiber board bookshelf for years and have always worried that it would eventually buckle. I could spend $100 on a 30 gallon aquarium shelf, or $190 for this setup, but wonder if I'm gaining any structural integrity or quality in materials.

isnt it safe to assume that the stand is built to support the tank as its purpose built for it?

I assume so, but that's gotten me in more trouble than I care to admit. Just wondering if someone would chime in and say, "there's a real-wood support built into these kinds of stands." Or something like that.

Probably be pretty easy to add a little bracing and coat any exposed wood surfaces with some epoxy paint as insurance.

Stand is strong. Pressed partical wood or fiber with black laminate. Some water from filter leaked and i didnt find it for about 2 days. I noticed that the black laminate peeled up and the wood felt spongy. I let it dry a couple days and made a sump outside the cabinet just to take off the weight from bottom. Tank and stand still good. Visited other pey stores to see about stand and yup there all pretty much the same. I would buy again. I was just in last week and tank was being sold for 299. So great buy. I'm in for 2

It might be to big. Start smaller they have 38g tanks for $75.

I bought a 55 gallon marineland tank with stand 6 months ago. Not thinking, i put it on 2nd floor where there's carpet. The uneven floor/carpet caused the tank to buckle and glass shattered . . Or was it a crappy stans :/
