I don't think that's valid. Most people already have a phone. So buying a dedicated GPS unit would actually incur an additional cost.

I personally do not like to use my phone GPS for more than 30 Mon drives. The battery drain, the need to charge and your phone is in glaring sunlight. We have a Garmin 2557 that does all this does outside of the wifi and trip advisor apps. Love it for road trips.

I use mobile (waze, google maps) for short city rides where I care about traffic. For long highway rides, I don't want my phone getting hot for so long. Dedicated GPS unit is great for such rides. So, yes there are uses for dedicated units.

Forgive my ignorance. What do these GPS units do nowadays that Waze, Google Maps, or Apple Maps can't do? I primarily use Waze.

one of the things they can do is save you about $400. plenty of good uses for a dedicated gps unit you just have to be open to the possibilities.

btw, same question was asked about a gopro camera. what can a gopro camera do that an iphone camera can't already do? :sigh:

Oh? Are you heavily using your phone while driving and navigating?

I use it as an offline map in case there's no connection. (Although you can download from Google maps offline on your phone as well, but it's limited)

some people on their job or in their official capacity cannot use their personal equipment. shall their company provide dedicated gps units or iphones for car navigation? i guess that depends on how rich the company is.

In some areas the difference between satellite navigation and cellphone tower navigation can be significant. When something isn't working, it's nice to have another option.

The screen resolution is the same as older units apparently, that sucks.
