Wait for x1400h to go onsale for $300 again. Basically same receiver but better Audyssey, zone 2 outputs, and extra year of warranty.

This is only partially correct. Let me clarify. When idle, amplifiers consume some power (probably 10ish watts plus or minus) JUST in the bias circuitry for the A/B amplifier. The more bias current and more wasted power, the better the distortion specs (it impacts linearity and crossover distortion tremendously) to a point of diminishing returns as you increase the bias. This is not something that has or will change with "digital parts" it's an amplifier design that hasn't changed in 50 years.

That said, with more digital parts, and higher speeds the power consumption of the digital portions have gone UP over time.

It is true that as you start pumping some volume your power and heat starts to be dominated by the actual audio power, but a LOT of the heat of your amp is that idle power and that is dominated by the bias current in each amplifier stage in each of your audio channels.

You may notice that some newer amps have "eco" modes. These (I believe) just reduce the bias current substantially and your audio performance likely suffers for it (though I've not really looked into this it's a pretty sensible assumption but take it with a grain of salt).

As for keeping it cool, since, at or near idle most amps don't have any fans on, you aren't getting very good efficiency out of the heat sinks. Just MINOR additional air flow will bring that temperature down quite a bit.

Although temperature is the enemy of electronics. Hyper cooling your amp may be silly. Especially in the discrete power stages of the amp which generate the most heat and have the highest temps, they are designed for that (the parts I mean). The junctions of the transistors are often able to operate long term at 100C to 150C. Normal ventilation is usually just fine. Don't put a blanket over them, don't put them in a cabinet with no openings, and if you do, you probably want separate cooling.

I'd be very skeptical that any statistically significant increase in product life occurs when you cool an amplifier beyond what I suggest above. (assuming an amp life of 10 years on 5 hours a day). Electrolytic capacitors would likely be the first thing to wear out (after internal fans) but should easily last 10+ years under normal design conditions (85C rated caps running at 50C during operation).

This is a front page deal especially with if you don't have tax or shipping. It all depends on the speakers you have. See the wirecutter and cnet reviews. The new model is out that adds airplay 2 support.

I disagree with this being an FP deal or exceptional

the 1400 and 2400 have both been less than this at least a couple times and are much better

Is it adequate at this price? Maybe, but even the 930 at $300 or less is only adequate IMO

Plenty of receivers are adequate for most non demanding / less advanced use cases in the $300 and sub-$300 range and perform similarly, maybe even better in some cases

Love the 1300 / 1400 and up denon models, not so much the lower end ones. But $300 or less is ok for those

My Denon runs cold compared to my Onkyo's. I own 3 Onkyo receivers and will never buy one again until they get the heat issues figured out.

Man... I was really hoping these were going to be brand trends so I could avoid heat issues going forward. I've killed two Onkyos after 3 years with normal use. My Denon receivers are still running after 10 years. There has to be a reason that Onkyo is cheaper.
