I'm a white noise addict.

No smart phone app can beat what the original Dohm can put out. It's the Cadillac of white noise machines. It does one thing, very well.

Couldn't agree more! Those who suggest using smart phones apps have probably never tried a mechanical noise generator.... so much better tone.

Not to mention they probably don't have kids. Kids nap and sleep at different times than adults meaning you'd have to part with your phone for much of the day if you used it as a white noise machine.

A sound app is fine for special circumstances like on travel, but at home a dedicated mechanical machine is the only way to go.

Just search Google Play (or the Apple equivalent) for a white noise app. There are lots of decent free ones. Some even allow you to modify the noise to your preference (a mix of rain, wind, fan, car on highway, etc.).

I use an actual white noise machine at home (2 speeds... I only ever use "high") and I'll use a cell phone app when travelling. I prefer the machine, but the app works well enough to drown out various hotel noises.

The price looks enticing for this one (as a possible backup for me). But after reading the reviews, I've learned there is a systemic issue with the power push-button (apparently it "sticks"). One reviewer suggests that replacing the button is simple and he even provides a part number for a replacement toggle-type switch. Now, I can deal with the button issue, but several reviewers also mention that the sound is not up to par with the "original version" of this unit (which was made in the USA vs. this one which is made in China). Thanks, but no thanks! I need all of the volume I can get with these things. Another reviewer states that this unit is noticeably lighter that the original (weight-wise) and that the inner components aren't nearly as impressive (everything inside looks "cheaper"). So after all that, despite the tempting price, I'd rather put my money towards a better, louder one with a reliable power button.

This thing is great and worth the money if it works for your child

We bought this in December and it works just fine. The button sticks but it is simple enough to pop it out. Even my 4 year old son can pop it out. The sound is on par with the more expensive ones.

Is this not as good as the classic, or is it just a different design? We have two of the classics that work really well but they are normally ~$50

People say on the reviews that the power button on this one easily breaks where it does not break on the classic. I would advise staying away from this product based on reviews.

Thanks and repped. With a small child there is a lot.of "press it on with your toe" action going on, a dodgy button doesn't seem the best choice in that respect

Tempting. I have the original and after running 24/7 for more than a year it's finally developed a barely discernible rattle. Took it apart and it's part of the motor that's wearing out- so no easy fix. Think I'm going to hold out for a deal on another classic.

Still have a Dohm 950 "Sleep Mate" I purchased in 1993 and use nightly. I have a newer "Classic" version in a guest room, no comparison; the newer version gets rattley, and isn't loud enough for my taste.
