We have four of these at work and have not had any issues with overheating. The normal problems we've run into is the same you would run into for any un-powered USB hub, and that is lack of power for lots of inputs. Personally, I have mouse/keyboard and a backup drive (2TB seagate, usb3) hooked up with no issues of power or overheating. I've even connected up to 32GB thumbdrives w/o anything disconnecting.

The only issue we had, was USPS lost the first package and we had to re-order.

Are u referring to the Sabrent 4-Port USB 3.0 Hub with Individual Power Switches and LEDs (HB-UM43) that was less than $4?

External hard drive works with this? It does not have extra power then how come it works?

Probably not a portable. Desktop externals have an alternate power source.

I have a 2TB portable drive hooked up to mine and it works fine. I have it on my iMac and I bring it to work with me to use with my MacBook. The 2 TB portable drives are for my time machine backups.
