If you consider tax ~ $102, it is a couple of dollars cheaper at $99.99 @ B&H (no tax for most) :

It was 89.99 several days ago. Considering 89.99 is a common discounted price for this drive and happens a lot I don't think it's a good deal. 79.99 on black Friday FYI.

1TB hard drives used to be $50 on SuperBiiz about 8 years ago ($85 for 2TBs). https://slickdeals.net/e/2292479-1tb-samsung-spinpoint-f3-hd103sj-7200rpm-hard-drive-53-2tb-samsung-spinpoint-f4eg-hd204ui-sata2-5400rpm-hard-drive-85?src=SiteSearch

Thanks for the memories; I actually bought that 1TB during that sale. Still going strong in my PC.

Sadly, it's just not a good time to buy PC parts. The 16GB of DDR4 RAM that I bought over two years ago is twice as expensive today. I bought my GTX 1070 over two years ago for $350, and until recently you were lucky to buy it for $700 when it was actually in stock (thanks, cryptominers).

A lot of the manufacturers are owned by WD or Seagate. WD just bought San Disk. So there's not much competition so they can set the price. Same with a lack of portable SSD producers so Samsung can crap a lot since lack of competition

I don't know if it will continue, but prices are trending down.

So I just ordered a 500gb internal ssd for the same price today. Should I return it and buy this (assuming that I can take the drive out of this case and put it in laptop?)

True. Free efficient markets only work when there is competition. When the government lets these giant mergers occur, it hurts us all. Remember that when you see this current administration approve so many giant mergers.

I don't believe you can shuck any of the Western Digital "portable" drives (either the My Passport or Easystore lines of products). They're all soldered directly to the board.

Say no to SMR. It actually *reads* slower as it fills up.
