I found this youtube video very interesting and wanted to share it with others here who would like to mount a better camera to their lamp, thus I made the following post:

Hack your own IP PoE Kuna Maximus lamp camera

Nice price for a nice looking combined Light + camera
( thanks phillylex for posting this! )

While I do like the idea of what Kuna has been doing, often the quality of the cameras included in their products have been a bit disappointing.

For example in this case:
720p HD camera (116-degree diagonal field of view)

So for placement this camera should be within 6 feet of any suspect you want to get a chance at a good ID image of.

The example of the lights by the door would be a good placement.

FYI - just posted this in the referred to thread:

Are there any good non cloud-dependent light+cam units out there? I was originally planning to install just cameras, but my lights are old and I wouldn't mind replacing them too.

A quick search only turns up this and the Ring floodlight.

Hi Merchantman,

Saw someone "hack" a IP PoE camera to the bottom of a light fixture

Ah... found it...

Note: I DO NOT recommend the camera he is using, and DO NOT recommend using dome cameras in outdoor settings in general.

The example picture makes no sense. Why do you need 2 cameras at your front porch facing the same direction Big Grin Big Grin Big Grin

Hi Aznxenon,

Makes complete sense, as due to the FOV angles one camera can not cover everything you want to cover that close to the cameras.

One camera covers the location where packages are dropped, the other faces of people walking up to the door.

Not everyone needs two cameras. One of them could be one of the less expensive companion lights that Kuna makes that doesn't have a camera.

I find no need for two cameras. When someone delivers a package I can see it in their hands as they walk up to the porch so there's no need to have a camera aimed down at the porch where it was dropped.

Have one and really like it. It recorded a package thief and I gave the video to police. I wish they had all styles at Costco because I'd buy another for my kitchen door.

Good to know about the companion lights, but holy cow those are almost the same price as the camera lights. Might as well have 2 cameras

Well yeah. That's true. Price is usually $150+ and companion is $99 so at those prices it makes more sense but not when the camera version is $99.

Question for anyone who has this or something similar. I have my porch light on a timer, which also controls other lights. Could I still use the timer if I want the built in motion sensor to control the light on this unit after the timer has turned it off?

Hmmm. I don't know how you expect the motion sensor to work if the light is turned off. The entire unit (light and camera) are controlled by the same two wire hookup for a wall mounted light.

Oops, didn't mean to post that in the old thread.

Yeah, the dome sticking out looks a little hacky. But why not domes outside in general? I was thinking at least for the front porch, that I might go with a dome for the aesthetic.

This looks like a good deal and was planning to jump on it. But after reading the many negative reviews on Amazon (most of them recent) and on Costco.com, I've decided against it. Great concept and features but doesn't appear to work very well at all. Read through the reviews before you decide to buy.

HI Merchant,

See my notes #55

I should have also covered it in the notes in the following wiki
