OP notes:
I use Chromebooks a lot as well as full feature laptops such as Dell's Precision line. However, there are often times when I want something in between, something with the full feature set of a PC but the mobility of a Chromebook. Most of the lightweight PCs that I see are of poor quality due to the non expandible MMC storage, poor display, or excessive thickness.

This seems to be the perfect balance for me for field work where I need to show things to people while standing up, for doing real PC stuff, presentations, and with an IPS display for video.

The weakness in this is of course the circa- Q4 2016 CPU, which rates in a little lower than the first generation i3-330m (IIRC 1200 vs 1800 passmark). However, it is imho a negligible price to pay considering the purpose of this tool.
If you purchase something through a post on our site, Slickdeals may get a small share of the sale.

Looks like a good deal. But the link is totally jacked. Multiple cross site scripting attempts, and then a microsoft page with "too many login attempts". I get that you need ad revenue, but this was ridiculous.

Hm... this is my best attempt at getting a clean link: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/trekstor-primebook-c11b-2-in-1-pc/8pl72p11cz9l

For just $200 plus the cost of an m2 this looks solid. The small form factor, 360 degree hinge, full HD, and touchscreen make this a good buy for anyone who doesn't need much horsepower. TU and repped

Been looking for an ultra cheap beater laptop. Went ahead and ordered: at least it's Microsoft Store so easy to return if it is terrible.

Would it be possible to put chrome OS on this? Maybe a lighter weight OS would improve performance and battery life.

You can install linux on any machine. One issue you might run into is finding the right drivers. These Chinese-branded laptops might use proprietary drivers for their hardware that might not be available for linux.

That was my first thought. I was considering getting this for my wife, but battery life should be better for such a low-powered machine.
