I bought this (S50) and the Deebot R96 that both went on deals this week.
Here's what I know from my research, peer review and self observation:

- Xiaomi customer support is abmissal whereas ECOVAC/ Deebot is phenomenal.
-Spare parts for Deebot are cheaper than S50 since you don't have to ship them from China.
-Deebot R96 has a mop and self-emptying functionality that works great for larger homes and for folks who need moping though it doesn't have a carpet sensor so it will drag it's dirty mop over a carpet or rug (which is where the Ozmo930 is superior with its carpet sensing technology)
-ECOVAC app has to remap your home everytime whereas Xiaomi saves it after 1st use. Extremely useful for many remote features.
-Xiaomi is more than 3-4 times more powerful in terms of suction. R96 is rated under 600pa~ (US VERSION though their spec is vague) whereas Xiaomi S50 is rated at 2000pa.
-Deebot R96 dual brushes provide no advantage over Xiaomi 4 times powerful suction.
-Both vacs can climb over and vacuum 1/2 inch shag rugs (though dark carpets/rugs have issues with their sensor)
-Their Lidar based navigation are on par with each other.
-Both the Deebot and Xiaomi are more forgiving on carpet with kids toys and charging cables on the floor (they don't suck it or get tangled on it), however on hardwood floor the R96 will get stuck due to its ability to be able to climb thicker rugs (so it will try to climb large items dropped on the floor and get stuck).
-Both vacs are far better than Roomba 980 at their price point.
-If money is no object, then the perfect robo vac is the Ozmo 930 - which is right now (June 2018) the best robo vac in the market.
-Comsumer Reports neither has Deebot or Xiaomi on their review page which is a shame because it's like trying to do a most reliable car test without Toyota or Honda in the list.

I'm currently using the Deebot R96 on my first floor where it's 95% hardwood flooring so I use the mop a lot and I use the Xiaomi S50 on the second floor where it's 95% carpet.
It's a balanced approach that works perfectly for me.

Yes, it adds a damp mop function, but the Gen2 also has 10% stronger suction than the Gen1 (2000cfm vs 1800cfm), and does FAR better on high pile/shag carpeting. It also had some additional software features such as zone cleaning, but this was recently added to the Gen1 as well.

My Gen1 is essentially useless on the shag area rugs in my house. It can get up onto them with some effort, but then struggles to move, and eventually gives up and moves off. The Gen2 changed the orientation of how the wheels retract into the body, and this new model goes over EVERYTHING. It cleans my rugs like a boss.

Other notable issues is that the Gen2 includes a floor protector that attaches to the dock that protects hardwood/laminate floors from excess moisture from the mop while charging.

Also, the dock is considerably smaller than the Gen1.

The dustbin on the Gen2 is larger and more efficiently designed than the Gen1, so it holds considerably more debris than the Gen1, meaning you have to empty less often.

Consumer Reports is complete garbage. There are tons of youtube videos for comparison.

The Xiaomi / Roborock are more efficient at cleaning (faster cleaning times with on par or better cleaning results than the top robot vacuums), and long battery time (this doesn't matter as much nowadays since most of the top tier vacuums have the recharge-reclean feature, but when gen 1 came out, I think the top tier Roomba was the only one).

Buy this thing! Best choice I made this year. Lol. Buy a squaretrade warranty call it a day. You don't even need a manual or the app to get it to work immediately

Yep. Great vacuum. Have both the Gen 1 and Gen 2. Can't go wrong with either one.

I did go under misc. Be careful to make sure Newegg doesn't tax your state. It could make the price of this higher.

I have a ridiculously shaggy rug that would immediately jam one of these. Does this vacuum have the ability to map around it accurately?

I don't even see an option to add Squaretrade. Where is it?

Any negatives to buying from Hong Kong?

Mopping isn't bad. It's better than a gimmick, but it could def be a lot better. I'm still satisfied with it's capabilities. Watch a couple YouTube videos on it to see how you'll feel. I just make mine mop twice while I'm gone or asleep. The battery on the device can take it for sure

I bought shipping insurance for ten bucks if it's an option. Most come from China anyways. Squaretrade is a 3rd party coverage option you have to search for online
