Connects in ATL. The ATL to STT direct flight is double this SAN-ATL-STT price. I hate this airline load/route management pricing.

Great deal for an end of summer trip. For those with skymiles laying around its only 14,000 skymiles from 9/10-16. Great use of miles!

You should all be advised that late September is the peak of the hurricane season in St. Thomas.

They frequently get slammed right within this window of ticket availability. It took many months for them to recover last year.

Trip cancellation insurance, or at least a refundable ticket is HIGHLY advisable.

I wonder if insurance would cover, if, say, your trip is a month after a hurricane but the place is still in bad shape from a hurricane (crossing fingers that everything goes well this year)

Not the same as it used to be 20 years ago. Greedy governor brought a bunch of corporate business and ruined the island. Pizza hut, kmart, kfc.. I think he was assassinated by one of the local guys.

How does St Thomas compare to Hawaii?
I went 1 year ago from this summer, so let me give you my observations.

- Think of USVI as the furthest outstretched location of the US. It IS owned by America, but has a definite 3rd world feel to it, and you get to drive on the opposite side of the road! St Thomas is very crowded and run down in many places - with a simple search on Trip Advisor, I learned that St John is a lot better place to stay as it is a lot more spacious. You still fly into St Thomas, then take a water taxi to St John. And unless you stay right on the beach, you're going to want to rent a vehicle. The roads are CRAZY with tons of inclines and sharp, blind corners - so BE SAFE!

- Hawaii has a lot more upscale resorts, city life, etc... but just based off my own experiences (not always the case for everyone) I enjoyed the wildlife more in USVI. Turtles galore, spotted rays, a few sharks, and lots of varieties of fish... Hawaii has a good amount of wildlife as well, I just enjoyed the large diversity in USVI.

- Food is quite expensive in both locations. (They're an island, duh...) so budget in a bit more as you're looking at around $5 for a gallon of milk, $25-28 for a large pizza, or $3 for a small taco.

TL;DR - USVI is a lot less... upscale of a location. However, if you enjoy adventure and a massively diverse marine life, USVI can serve you up both! Just be seriously careful when driving there.

Price also works with Chase Ultimate Rewards. Got two round trip tickets for 33,000 points and am covered for free with my Chase Sapphire Reserve trip insurance benefit (yes, it includes travel purchased with points).
