They do that because it's hard for you to stay away when they dominate an airport like DFW. You don't have a lot of choice.

$434 from Austin?! Nice. Wish I saw that deal then. I'm from Austin and it's very rare for us to get a good deal like this.

All true about AA from DFW vs AA from AUS for many of the routes that go on sale.

You can still get huge savings sometimes by making itineraries with DFW-XXX-AUS and dumping the DFW-AUS leg. Airlines don't like that and there have been stories (rumors) that people have lost all the miles in their AAdvantage account.

I once managed to get a trip to MEX this way and saved $~300. The AUS flight was the next morning, so when I arrived in DFW, I called AA and asked to cancel as I decided to drive down instead; at least it opened up the seat for someone else.

I can promise you that your struggles are no where near as bad as a resident of ATL. Delta has complete control and we miss out on nearly all national/international deals.

This is less than I pay AA for a 1-hour flight from BHM-CLT. Love those route monopolies!
