I already had one of these sets without the D-Handle that I bought a couple years ago. I just bought this set up at an auction for ~$30 after tax and auction fees because it came with the D-Handle. And it doesn't hurt to have more than one router. This is a great tool, easy to use. The dust collection isn't the best but then again I haven't found a router yet that has great dust collection.

This is about $60 cheaper than I've every seen it. Plus it comes with the vey nice carrying case, in my opinion is worth at least $20.

So for the 3 years I've been watching things, this is by far the best deal!

How does this compare to the Bosch 1617EVSPK? I purchased that just recently but haven't used it yet. Should I return it and get this?

If you don't know what a router is used for, then you don't need a router. If you are curious what it is used for, Google is great at answering very basic questions.

Palm router vs these guys

Palm Router

A palm router is a lot smaller yet carries a big punch. The main reason why you'd want a palm router over one of these bigger ones is if you're dealing with fine detailing aka carving. Carving is so much fun, a part of woodworking I really never thought of until I started watching Dave Rhotens channel on YouTube. The DeWalt one is the best because of the clear base it comes with by default, it's excellent at control, you can use the extra glass thats sticking out with your fingers for granular accuracy.

If you go that route, look up the router bits they suggest, most are by Whiteside. $30 for one bit, but it cuts through like butter. And yes you can carve with a big one but trust me when I say it's a giant pain in the a$$.

I've cut with large roundover bits through red oak just fine without any burning to the wood.. that's not a joke, just did it two days ago and was amazing that little thing had so much power! I thought I'd have to eventually get one of these bigger ones too but its good enough. And can be used with a router table.

Regular Router

This is better if you dont plan on carving fine detailed work like signs or art. It has even more power which is never a bad thing. It's bulky yes, but when you're going down a board, the size of it actually makes it a bit more stable (granted it takes two seconds to make a jig to stabalize a hand router).

It's also better if you plan on using it as a planer, that extra power can handle more in shorter time without burning. Again, I've seen YouTubers use the DeWalt palmrouter without issues.. but still, doesn't hurt.

And a little side note, the palm router kit by DeWalt very rarely goes on any decent sales, and it's $20 less than this kit. If I had to start all over again, I'd still go with the palm router but if you dont care about carving - go with this and have fun routing.. they're extremely versatile, amazing little things.

I personally have had a lot of trouble with this particular plunge base. The way the collar is designed its just a compression fitting around the motor which causes it to slowly creep upwards. This makes the plunge cut get shallower and shallower. I was observing this after just a few passes with a 1/2 straight bit. I believe this is a common issues with this router. I have yet to figure out how to fix it.
