Citi Mastercard AAdvantage Executive - Coverage Changes

+8 Deal Score

Considering the attention on these forums given to things like price protection benefits, theft protection, warranty protection, and the like, I wanted to summarize a few changes that I recently learned about from Citi that apply to coverage under their World Elite Mastercard.

TL;DR: all of these changes are negative for cardholders - excluding certain product types, shortening coverage windows, and removing companion travelers for travel related policies.

Here are the changes:

PURCHASE PROTECTION

Citi Price Rewind
- $200 per item cap, down from $500 per item cap
- $1000 calendar year cap, down from $2,500 calendar year cap
- tires, watches, firearms, ammunition no longer included
- explicit clause to exclude prices from "warehouse clubs" ie Sams Club

90 Day Return Protection (if retailer will not accept return)
- down from $2,500 calendar year cap to $1,500 calendar year cap
- explicitly excludes firearms, ammunition, tires, jewelry, furniture or appliances

Damage & Theft Purchase Protection (if purchase stolen or damaged)
- length of coverage after purchased reduced from 120 days to 90 days (does not matter for NY residents, who are capped at 90 days regardless)
- no longer covers "lost" items (this seems important, but unclear)
- no longer included firearms, ammunition, tires
- explicitly excludes items under care of third party (original policy was not explicit about this)
- coverage now secondary, not primary (again does not matter for NY residents, who are forced to use this as secondary if existence of primary coverage)

TRAVEL

Worldwide Car Rental Insurance
- down from $100,000 cap to $75,000 cap
- explicitly states that coverage won't apply to charges or expenses for the loss of use of the rental car, rental agency fees, or taxes - may not be materially different from original policity

Trip Cancellation & Interruption Protection:
- down to $5,000 per trip, as opposed to $5,000 per covered traveler per trip. Unclear if $5000 benefit cap now applies to entire party or not, or still per traveler
- No longer covers "Traveling Companion", meaning any individual(s) for whom you have paid to travel on your or your Family Member's trip using your Citi card and/or AAdvantage® miles.

Trip Delay Protection and Baggage Delay Protection
- Minimum delay requirement lengthened from 6 hours from 3 hours
- No longer covers "Traveling Companion", meaning any individual(s) for whom you have paid to travel on your or your Family Member's trip using your Citi card and/or AAdvantage® miles.

Lost Baggage Protection and Travel & Emergency Assistance
- No longer covers "Traveling Companion", meaning any individual(s) for whom you have paid to travel on your or your Family Member's trip using your Citi card and/or AAdvantage® miles.

Hope this helps. Price Rewind (at least for large electronics purchases) seems to be the biggest loss. Attaching the old guide that shows the original coverage details, for the curious.

Edit: Changes go into effect July 29, 2018. In terms of Price Rewind, not sure what that means in terms of purchases made before that date.
Edit2: Somewhat of a repost (albeit some time ago) of two threads from other Citi cards also implementing these changes. Good points of reference:

Along with these changes they increased my annual fee from $90 to $95. They usually credit it each year, but another Aadvantage card I had, I called to cancel due to the fee and they said ok, bye.

With Citi you actually can start it right after you purchase ( online ) submit the copy of ad/receipt and the lower price and a few business days later you will get an email asking you to submit credit statement ( it doesn't have to be complete just showing the charge on there ) and should get confirmation approval a few days later .

But you might want to read up ( seems like there was another thread on here or Reddit ) about problems with Walmart screenshots and Citi ( just started ) YMMV but looks like Citi is cracking down on Walmart with having to make calls to the stores

Chase is actually in the process of killing price protection on its cards

So you've basically just got Discover and Citi now...(plus I suppose any mastercard from someone other than Citi- the limits are lower (and Citis will be lower still here shortly)

Chase sucks...They have been slowly cancelling all my Chase cards for lack of use. Chase gives 1% cash back on every purchase. Penfed gives 5% on gas, 3% on groceries (in the form of rewards that cut the yield to ~ 4.25 on gas and 2.55% on groceries) on one of my cards and my other Penfed card gives 2% (REAL CASH) on everything else. Soon, I am planning to move all purchases to the 2% card. The incremental yield of the Gas Groceries card is not worth the trouble for an additional ~~$10 ~ $30 per month.

People are complaining, but as someone who has had credit cards for 35 years now, we should be thankful that we lived through the "golden age" of credit cards with sign up bonuses and all these benefits.

Having them taken away is never fun, but the alternative (cash/debit cards) is worse even without these benefits. If all I got from credit cards were my reward points plus fraud protection, I'd still use them.

Plus, the internet has made the potential for fraud all too easy. My guess is that many people are abusing the system...

Not sure what crappy chase cards you've got, but all mine give significantly more than 1% on all purchases.

For example this quarter the Freedom is giving 5x points on grocery stores- which is either 5% straight cash, or potentially between 7.5% and 50% cash back used for travel (depending how cleverly you use it)

The worst chase card anybody should actually be using gives 1.5x points on non-category stuff.... which is a minimum of 2.25% on travel, potentially as high as 7.5-15% toward travel depending how you use it.

(now if you don't travel Chase isn't worth bothering with- other than the Freedom card for the 5% rotating categories- and the Ink Cash for 5% on phone, cable, and internet)

Can you describe the means you use to get 7.5-15 CB towards travel?
