They do look like that, don't they Smilie

While these aren't DeWalt or Milwaukee or Makita tools, they're certainly enough to have around an apartment or house for basic stuff. Pretty good deal, plus it comes with two batteries, which is handy.

That's probably because his toys are Black and Decker also. They make some of the best cheapo tier workbench toys.

I was worried about opening this post because I recently got B&D trimmer/blower combo and the circular saw, but I don't need the rest of it. Maybe the reciprocating saw but I think I'd rather get a better one.

I bought a different set, but ended up adding to it since it all uses the same battery.
The drill is solid, but can overheat quick, got it fixed under a non-too-friendly warranty repair program
the saw is ok, but the blade size is 5.5in, so be wary if you do lots of deep cuts it will work decent, but I tried using it to saw through my deck to remove it, it was a battle and I gave up.
The sawzall is also ok, recently cut out a metal window and some odd framing. works for what I do, but the corded one is much better, I used the corded one for removing a swingset, the battery wouldn't last long for that.
The light works fine.

They should call it what it is: a 3 tool set with flashlight.

I like B&D stuff. They have their purpose. Not professional grade by any means, but to those that don't need tools like this often, they're great for the price.

And being this is listed on amazon, and we all know they only pricematch other sites, I would check other retailers to see if they have the same price listed. You may be able to score a cheaper price with coupon code or store card discount.

I have this kit. It's not very good, but if you only need the tools for occasional lightweight duty they're fine.

The best thing about the BD 20V tool line is that you can fairly easily modify the batteries to work in Porter Cable tools, which are a solid step above BD if not at Dewalt / Makita / Milwaukee level. I've got a PC brushless drill and impact wrench that I use the crap out of, and with my cheap BD stuff I've always got plenty of batteries.

If you have a moment could you elaborate on the nature of the mod? Does the BD battery go over to the PC? Or is i the other way? If you have any good links elsewhere, that might be clearest.

Thanks,
d.

Did some looking myself, found this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oFtqMi642Gg

Another video makes mention of needing to modify plastic on the PC tool to accept the BD battery

I was a bit thrown, the B&D batteries that I've gotten are black cases, the ones I am seeing in videos are an off-white that looks like the PC tools. Conversely the PC batteries that are being shown are more or less B&D color, at elast to my eye. Still it isn't the color of plastic I am interested in and I think the above video, as well as a few more, is substantially correct. It appears that the PC charger is more substantial than the BD units I've seen.

So now I'd update my question: Is there anything necessary beyond plastic mods?

Just plastic mods. You do have to cut off a bit of plastic on the PC tools to take the BD battery as shown, otherwise it's just removing tabs from the batteries and chargers with a box knife. Honestly it's pretty obvious what needs to be done when you have both batteries in your hands.

They are the same price at Lowes, on the front page of the circular.

I have this set. The circular saw kind of sucks, but the reciprocating saw is a beast. The main limitation is they only sell 1.5 and 2.0 amp batteries AFAIK.

Edit: looks like they currently make a 3.0 and used to make a 4.0, but I've never seen them in stores.
