Most airlines do a status match/challenge tho. I know American charges for it, but United, Delta and Alaska all did it for free recently. While southwest doesn't have first class they do always fly 737, allow 2 free bags, no change fees (only fare difference) and have great on time performance from my airport.

Yes they do. It's called the Exit Row.

I think that's his point.

Southwest status doesn't "get" you much compared to other airlines.

You already get checked bags free (this is a status benefit on many other airlines)- ditto free change fees....

they don't offer first class, so you don't upgrade options like that either.

You basically get nothing at all from A-list other than-

A shorter security line (which most anyone already has from the 937 cards giving free Precheck/Global Entry these days)

25% bonus on paid flights- most folks aren't taking because they're using SW points from that 110,000 they earned to get companion pass...though I suppose if you travel SW a LOT you might drill down to making cash-like bookings with UR via the CSR portal, so then it's a small benefit.

Priority for standby... which most folks never fly anyway.

A "dedicated" phone number...whoopie!

A low boarding number- which you can get for free just by checking in on time...(or using one of the various misc airline fee credits on various cards to buy earlybird check in)... as suggested pretty much the ONLY real "upgrade" A-list gets is a better shot at exit row, since they get slots ahead of the earlybird/on-time check ins.

Not to say it's not worth getting if it's free- but it's not worth putting much effort into for the few benefits it gives you.

Sorta, Delta charges change fees for all status levels although they often waive them if you get a good rep. The only benefit I truly care about with southwest status is the earnings bonus. I find southwest award travel to generally be the cheapest in points, but you have to book in advance. Last minute point booking is actually better with the traditional carriers. My opinion is that the 737 is much nicer than regional aircrafts, but that is just personal preference I guess.

Worth a shot for better boarding position.

For those who are complaining that SW status sucks it's worthwhile to remember there is very little effort required to request the status match. Likely the same amount of time that was spent to post this message. Thanks OP!
