I got this a few years back. Soon, you'll want to replace a few of the items with better versions. The 1602 lcd it comes with requires like 10+ wires. There's an i2c version that cuts it down to 4 wires. Same with the 4 digit lcd. There are relay breakouts that are simpler to use than the included one. And the dht22 temperature and humidity is a lot more accurate than the included dht11.

Finally, you'll outgrow the Arduino and wanted to use a board with WiFi like esp8266 or esp32. You can get most of these, including the esp8266 for only ~$3 with free China shipping on eBay.

A lot of the projects are very simple and kid friendly. You can start them out with the LED projects, make them glow, flash, make small changes to the code that's provided and learn from there. Basically if they can follow a diagram to plug wires and pins into the proper holes and can type, they should be able to do it.
