I got one of these refurbished about 6 months ago. My setup:
- 2.1 setup with Elac stereo speakers and SVS subwoofer
- Apple TV 4k, PS4, PS3
- Sony X900e TV

For the most part, it does what I bought it to do. It improves the sound of my TV without the need for an extra remote. I use my Apple TV remote and PS3/4 controllers to do just about everything except advanced settings.

Turning on the Apple TV or a playstation turns on the TV and I'm able to control the receiver volume from the Apple TV remote. The TV detects a receiver and automatically turns its speakers off. Turning off my Apple TV turns off the receiver and TV. Switching to a playstation is as easy as turning them on via their controller power buttons. Switching back to the Apple TV is done by pressing the menu or home button on its remote.

All of this is done though HDMI.

Power output is more than adequate for a stereo setup with a powered subwoofer. Though you might want more power or an external amplifier for larger speakers.

Notes/issues:
- You must configure a hidden setting to get 4:4:4 4k working properly. See the manual.
- It's got no pre-outs for an external amplifier, though this model isn't really high-end enough to warrant that.
- It sometimes (rarely) takes a long time to turn on. I'll turn on the Apple TV, it will power on, and the TV will power on, but the receiver takes an extra 10 seconds to turn on.
- It sometimes switches to TV audio (via ARC) when I turn it on, even though I have ARC disabled in the receiver settings.
- Its settings are adequate, but I wish there were more. One example is that you can't modify the auto-EQ settings. You can set your own EQ from scratch, which is a pain, or stick with the auto settings (that it detected via microphone).
- It doesn't work well with the auto-on feature for SVS subwoofers (the subwoofer doesn't turn on early enough). This is due to a low subwoofer pre-out voltage, which is typical for Yamaha receivers. My Onkyo subwoofer worked much better with it, but still didn't come on early enough for my liking. I ended up building relay that turns on my subwoofer whenever the TV comes on.
- HDMI cables are finicky. Using certain cables with certain devices will cause random blackouts, audio cuts, or other issues. In my experience, the quality/price of the cable makes no difference, so buy a bunch of different brand cheap cables to get everything working properly.

Bought one a few months ago when the refurb deal was up. I've been very happy with it so far -- it serves as my main receiver downstairs in the living room, feeding an AppleTV, xbox one, and Nintendo Switch to a new Sony xbr-850e.

ARC functions great, wonderful sound on 4k discs, etc. Not a bad deal for a budget receiver.

Any reported HDMI handshake issues with this receiver? My Denon is unbearable.

No issues other than one weird ARC issue. When ARC is turned on and I play 4K movie from my 4K player, this unit will flip to ARC input, instead of staying with 4K-Player input. Haven't completely troubleshooted this yet. Otherwise, I don't see any other issue.

Atmos and DTS-X doesn't show on the display as being decoded but I don't see any issues playing those discs.
