It's actually a new item, but the speed is AC2200, not AC3000 like the original Orbi RBK50. Speed-wise, it's still faster than the Google WiFi, which is AC1200.

Firstly, I have the AC3000 RBK50 Orbi system and I love it. It solves difficult to solve wifi problems in houses with inconvenient router placement or thick walls. The dedicated backhaul connectivity to the satellites is faster than I imagined and it really works well.

However I do always feel the need to point out the detail that the Orbi is not really a "mesh" wifi system the same way its competitors are (despite the name). It's a hub and spoke model. In other words, the two satellites do not talk to each other, they both have to communicate back to the base station.

This is relevant when deciding whether to purchase this, because while you might assume you can have the base station in one corner of your house and then daisy chain the two satellites across your home to get full coverage, you cannot actually do this. With an actual mesh wifi system you could do this.

The benefit is that both satellites are getting full bandwidth directly from the base station. The drawback is that it is not as flexible in the ways you can leverage the two satellites. This is still a great product and I recommend it to people all the time. But it's helpful to understand the differences between this hub and spoke wifi system and mesh wifi systems like Google Wifi, Velop, eero, etc.

I might actually be incorrect. The documentation on Netgear's website implies that the RBK23 may actually be a true mesh solution. In this case that's a pretty cool leap forward if it's still leveraging dedicated radios for unit-to-unit communication and would give it a pretty big leg up on other mesh solutions. It's tough to find reviews that talk about this specifically because a lot of articles on the old ones often still incorrectly called them mesh wifi.

My brand new house is wired for ethernet. Would I be best serviced going this route or using my current AC2600 router and buying two access points for the other floors (connected via ethernet)?

This system would give you better results than regular access points

Just know that Orbi system and firmware is glitchy and you'll learn not to be frustrated with these units.

I bought the Orbi system months ago and love it-- sends a super fast Wifi signal throughout every part of my house now (upstairs and main level), and even outside to my deck & patio area.

I got the original Orbi 2 packs for my house and they work like a charm! I'm getting these 3 packs for my parents' house since they have a larger house and they don't need high speed like i did.

I just got the Orbi system from Costco (3 pack RBK50). So far so good. I have the home router in my office, one satellite upstairs in the bedroom, and the other satellite backhauled in the basement. I have "gigabit" internet through Xfinity (doesn't seem to be true gigabit, highest speeds I've achieved with Ethernet plugged into the home router is 580 mbps). Just a heads up that you'll need a 3.1 modem if using gigabit internet through Xfinity. Overall I'm really happed with the setup, I was debating between this and google WiFi, but the additional Ethernet ports on the Orbi system was the selling point for me since I had a few things that I preferred being plugged into the home router (PLEX server, HDHomeRun, backhaul Ethernet to basement satellite).

Do these Orbi systems allow linkage via ethernet? I was under the impression that they are basically wireless repeaters.

Thanks!

At 400 I'm not sure why people don't just get a Ubiquiti router, 8 port switch, 2 APs, and get someone to pull 2 wires for them. Basically the same price, but better performance.

For those wondering netgear offered a firmware update that allows satellite units to daisy chain, effectively making this a mesh system even for previous models
