Monoprice MP-65RT 6.5in and Ribbon Tweeter 2-Way Bookshelf Speakers (Pair) [monoprice.com] are on sale for $44.99, with free shipping. Use coupon GOAL5 to bring this down to $39.99 (they're not excluded!).

Audioholics has a really nice review [audioholics.com] of these that was just put up last week. The takeaway is that they're a bit bright (could be modded with a simple first order low pass filter, or a real crossover, or eq'd to take care of that) but have excellent imaging. Some of the reviews on MP complain that they're not quite as impressive in terms of bass as some might prefer, but a comment on Audioholics makes it sound like their bass probably outperforms for the price, but that they excel paired with a sub.

Everyone seems to agree that while they might be a bit over bright in the higher ranges, they have outstanding imaging.

For $39, I'm considering getting a pair even if it's just to cannibalize the tweeters and DIYfrankenstein them with some Miccas. $20 per would be a fantastic price just for some decent ribbon tweeters alone. Or maybe I'll just swap them in as my main desktop speakers in place of my MB42s if I do get a pair and they're better. Still trying to decide if I'm going to cave and order some myself, I really shouldn't since I have enough speakers just laying around for various projects as it is, but they're super tempting to try out those ribbon tweeters.
If you purchase something through a post on our site, Slickdeals may get a small share of the sale.

To be perfectly accurate, these aren't ribbon tweeters but planar tweeters. I happen to love the sound of both types, so the only argument I have here is the inaccurate description (and many people make this mistake). I have way more speakers than any 10 sane people need, so I'm not going to be ordering these, but I'd say this is a great price for an entry level speaker, and I'll bet it would be a good basis for a 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound system (of course you'll have one speaker left over, since they don't appear to sell them individually and there is no matching center. but at this price, who cares?).

They're regularly $50. The $40 is after a sale and coupon. I don't know if that makes it slick, but it is $10 off the regular price. Also, the free shipping is good for Monoprice.

Still Monoprice. Why, in OP's attached thumbnail, does it look like one of the speaker cover inserts broke off in the speaker and they took the picture like that anyway?

It's removable. It just shows one with and one without.

There is a broken speaker cover insert stuck in one of the holes on the coverless speaker.

I have a pair of these for my basement. They are surprisingly good for the price. IMHO, the deal here is the Free Shipping. I've often put things that were good deals from Monoprice into my cart and then was turned off by what I feel were very high shipping charges. Maybe I'm spoiled by Amazon but last I tried to get some Cat6 for ~$9 the shipping was ~$13. Obviously I didn't buy it.

I've already got 5.1 ...thinking of grabbing a pair to extend to 7.1 (wasn't a thing when I bought the rest)... Seems like these would be solid for that?

I typically recommend going for speakers from the same series as the speakers you've already got, but you can't really go wrong at this price.

Yeah,I mean, this is 40 bucks, when eventually I can get those monitor audio bronzes, I'm not going to blink that i have two extra speakers probably... Garage sale or Craigslist them and make some of it back.

Probably, especially since with surrounds most receivers that don't have Audyssey/etc are balanced to not rely on them for bass to begin with, and anything with Audyssey or similar should be able to EQ these out well enough to be worth it. The one thing talked up everywhere was the clarity in the mids and highs, which is what I usually personally watch the most for. Muddy or lacking bass in a 7.1/etc system, especially on the surrounds, can usually be taken care of with a good sub and a higher crossover point on those speakers, but nothing will ever fix muddiness in the midrange if the speakers are muddy there. Strong imaging like these are claimed to have is nice in surrounds.

I'd agree with swechsler that I too usually recommend keeping at least surrounds/rear surrounds the same as each other, but these are $40 /shrug.
