So could I use these to add smart home functionality in 3 different houses, instead of using a three different SmartThings hubs?

Yes. I own these and have used them in various configurations splitting them apart between houses. That will work all 3 are identical and any of them can act as the main one.

I thought I read a lot of negative about these. I'm not sure how to separate fact from angry customers.

1. I read only one can act as smartthings hub

2. I read it is limited and can't do all of the features of smartthings

3. I read these hang and need frequent reboots

I'm doing a fresh smart home setup in new house, I'm struggling with what to select (btw its 99 on amazon now and gets a 2.9 rating out of 5 stars)

I have had a SmartThings Hub for a couple of years now. The same one.
But I have upgraded my network system more than once since owning Smartthings.
I would suggest a separate system for WiFi so you are not stuck with old tech if they do not upgrade the Samsung Smart connect often.
Unless you don't care for flexibility with a network system.

From my experience the devs working on Smartthings will break functionality and you are left with a non-functioning feature.

For instance I purchased Samsung robotic vacuums just to connect to Smartthings. During a feature update I lost the ability to connect to them... since 11/2/16
I would hate for them to control my WiFi too! Because you have no control over your hubs firmware

Just my two cents.

Just a point on #2 a lot of the complaints about this router were that it can't do the same as smart things. That actually wasn't true Samsung was dumb in that they didn't include all the features in the home connect app but all you had to do was download the normal smart things app and use the same login making the feature set identical.

Also they updated the home connect app since not sure if it added all the same features to that app but you always have the fallback of just using the normal smart things app.

For those who are interested in this, but don't have a student/employer discount, Crutchfield has it $100 and doesn't charge tax. [crutchfield.com] Comes out to about the same price after tax at Samsung. Crutchfield gift cards are also 20% off if you have a Discover card with enough cashback to redeem for them. Otherwise, Best Buy and Amazon both have this for $100 as well.

Lowe's also has it for $200 [lowes.com] but you could probably price match to Best Buy with their 110% price match policy bringing it down to $90 before tax. This might be the best option for the lowest price and easy returns in case it doesn't work well.

This is just a WiFi mesh system that NOT ACTING AS SMART THING HUB. You still need smart thing hub to control device.
I don't own this but from reading the description, it sure sounds like it does act as a SmartThings hub as well.

SmartThings Hub supports z-wave and zigbee? Can something confirm if this does or doesn't, I can seem to find any direct info on this.

Crutchfield, Amazon and prolly the rest have the higher speed/longer rangeConnect Hub Pro AC2600 hub reduced to $70. [crutchfield.com] That's down from $179.

These are compatible with the Connect Home AC1300 system...and you can add multiple Pro AC2600 Models into a mesh as well.

These are GREAT prices! But Why?
  • This could be a limited time special to jump-start sales of the current generation product.
  • It could be because there are lots of owner reviews and forum feedback that says the system is unstable and does not work reliably.
  • They could be coming out with totally new generation product that solves the issues.
  • They could be getting out of the Wi-fi business and sticking to smart hubs.

I am really tempted because of the prices....but if the system is unreliable and there are no firmware fixes it is useless.

Actually, it is a smart things hub.. I have this system with no separate hub in my house and it works fine.
