"You need, for God's sake, a decent chefs knife. No con foisted on the general public is so atrocious, so wrongheaded, or so widely believed as the one that tells you you need a full set of specialized cutlery in various sizes." - AB, R.I.P.

Recommend Mercer Genesis. $30-40, less when on sale.

He's saying that Anthony Bourdain says that you don't need an entire set of knives and that is just a marketing thing, just get yourself a good quality chefs knife. He recommends the Mercer genesis. Comment above that says these knives rust.

Chef here. You do not need a set of knives, but you DO need a chef's knife, at least one santoku, a paring knife, a bread knife, and a boning knife.

You do NOT have to buy them in a set, nor should you. You can find these all separately on discount sites, as I have.

Do not but this cuisinart garbage. You'll regret it.

No.

Get the previously mentioned Mercer or some Victorinox/Forschner and those will last your whole life though.

I bought a no name knife set from Boscov's for $5. I had it over ten years, and while the knives developed a few rust spots over the years, the rust wasn't terrible.

I now have a Kitchenaid set, which was a "deal" at $30, comparable to this Cuisinart set. After a year, the knives are rusted beyond recognition. Never again.

Any decent rust resistant 18/8 or 18/10 knife sets out there that don't cost a fortune?

These are complete crap. Lousy quality and they'll rust on top of that.

Not a hot deal at all. Just cheap.

The Yuki has a reactive core. I'm going to recommend their in house knives just because they're stainless and inexpensive https://www.chefknivestogo.com/cklikngy21.html
the guys at that store are helpful knife zealots. Two thumbs up!
I'd also look into www.Japaneseknifeimports.com from my experience, the fit and finish is superb even on sub 120 dollar knives there
