Gigabyte Aorus Gaming Box eGPU w/Geforce GTX 1080 $549.99 at Micro Center in-store and shipping

Was just browsing and noticed this 1080 eGPU, MSRP is $699. Some stores show stock so YMMV on local availability, but it does show a shipping option for $5.99. Online orders for shipping with Micro Center can be iffy so beware. Interestingly they still have the GTX1070 version listed at $599.99.

eGPU still is (and probably will always be) niche. I myself have the 1070 version of this box, shucked the 1070 into my mITX build and popped a Radeon RX560 in the eGPU enclosure to mess around with hackintosh which works surprisingly well.

This is probably not too great a deal for shucking the card since they've been dropping in price and you should find regular 1080 under $500 without much difficulty. And this card will look seriously ugly since it doens't even have a shroud over the fan lol.

2014 Macs have Thunderbolt 2, so I believe it will work with a TB2 to TB3 cable, but it will not be plug and play since Apple limited it to models with TB3 when they officially added support for eGPU. Regardless though, it is definitely not recommended on TB2, at least on a high end GPU like the 1080. With a high end GPU, even Thunderbolt 3 is a serious bottleneck. When I experimented eGPU on my hackintosh via TB3, the performance loss on the Radeon RX560 is roughly 10-15%. The higher end a GPU is, the more performance loss from TB3 overhead.

Just a complete guess here as I have no idea, running this 1080 eGPU over TB2, my guess is it'll be performing like a 1050ti. People have been using eGPU with Macs as old as the 2011 Mac Mini which is Thunderbolt 1. If you're really interested in an eGPU setup for your 2014 Pro, I'd start my research here: https://egpu.io/setup-guide-exter...-card-mac/

Just be aware that performance will be 60% to 80% of a standard GTX 1080 (desktop or laptop version). Nice option if you have a decent CPU and integrated graphics.

Completely agree. If your laptop has a 1060, you'd only see a ~5% increase in performance with this egpu. You can also forget about 144hz, since TB3 doesn't provide enough bandwidth to support it for most "AAA" titles.

I really want to buy this for my XPS 15 9570, but mine only has a 1080p 60hz screen, so in the end the 1050 TI tends to run everything at high at 1080p, this would be over kill unless I brought a 1440p 144hz monitor around with me.

Wish Zotec made this unit though, their micro 1080 cooler design is much more efficient.

Mobile 1060 and desktop 1060 have significantly different performance.
