All you guys thinking of small incremental camera upgrades. If your camera is still working, and there's not a feature that is a must have on a newer camera, I cannot stress enough that the biggest upgrade you can make isn't the body, or even the glass, but in yourself. Take some classes, you'll be amazed how quickly you'll improve with a good teacher.

I'm a full time photographer for over a decade, and have run a photography school for 6 years. I see this all day long. People struggling for months to find the decent info on youTube, then coming to me and in a few weeks are so much better. It's cool to watch. Smilie

I agree the 50mm f/1.8 is a great value lens and will help you learn a lot about photography.

I'm a beginner that purchased a camera bundle similar to this last October and have learned a ton in a short period of time. I love this camera but I'd recommend that you also pick up a 50mm fixed lens. There's a compatible generic lens made by Yongnuo available on Amazon [a.co] well below the cost of the Canon brand lens that works great for me. Here's a quick explainer on why this type of lens is recommended: https://digital-photography-schoo...me-lenses/

Since I got the 50mm fixed lens I basically haven't taken it off the camera. It's my go-to lens for just about everything except when I really need to throw on my 75-300mm zoom lens for some scenarios. I rarely use the 18-55mm lens that came with the camera now.

at $270 i think it is a good deal for a beginner. the 18-55mm kit lens is a beginner's lens that will cover a wide angle at 18mm(for group shots and some landscapes) all the way to a short telephoto at 55mm (for when you need to get in a little closer to your subject). I think as long as you are in good light then this lens and camera combo on program auto mode should do the trick for most photographic situations. You're gonna need an SD card, a bag, maybe a UV filter to protect the lens, and a tripod if you want to do some light video or play with long exposure photography. if your gf wants to start taking more pictures of people, adding on a 50mm f1.8 lens at $125 new (or even cheaper refurb or local used) would be a great addition to this camera exploring shallow depth of field (aka what portrait mode on iphone 7+ tries to fake).

Worth it to sell an old Rebel T3 and get this? I've been thinking about upgrading for awhile, though not sure this is a big enough step...

It's not a big update. Maybe new sensor and custom function is only change between t3 and t6.

I'm assuming this is better than a 40d because of all the lens and autofocus updates that came with time, but about how much better does anyone think?

As a previous T2I user who upgraded last year, you should go with something more like an 80D or a 6D. Going from a T3 to a T6 will probably not feel like enough of a substantial upgrade with your money.(Or you can invest more in glass too)
