From looking at the specs, is this a downgrade from the first one—with the exception of a newer OS. They made it dimmer!?

I've used this projector a few times for the last 2 weeks. Been working great. I will say at the price OP posted is the most one should pay.

didn't realize this was battery operated at first...

if you don't need battery operated or short throw... spend a little more and get the Optoma hd143x 1080p native 3000 lumen projector imo. I've had it for a week now and the picture is amazing! even at 100 inch screen the picture is super crisp and was well worth the investment for my home theater. I use it all day long after putting up some blackout curtains

Non-related guidance please. I posted this exact deal yesterday and got thumbs down. What did I do wrong?

Yes, but they also made it cheaper as well. IIRC the original was in the 7-900 dollar range, whereas this one is 540 MSRP (Amazon now says 560, but it was 540 at the time of release a couple weeks ago). The main differences between this and original mars is:

Battery (this one is 30,000 mAH)
Resolution (nit-picky, but 1280x800 on the Mars versus 1280x720 on the Mars 2)
Brightness (500 ANSI lumens on the Mars versus 300 ANSI lumenson the Mars 2)
Improved Android OS (4.0 versus 7.1)
Auto-focus (Mars doesn't have it, Mars 2 does, and it really does focus in about a second).

I never owned the Mars, and I had the Capsule for a week before returning to upgrade to this one. So far I love it, especially with the ability to plug in a flash drive to play movies off of directly. If you are looking for a portable projector, you can't go wrong with this one.

Also, I paired mine with the 100" Elite Screens outdoor projector frame. It's front-projection only, but the screen is only 4 pieces (frame, 2 legs and snap button screen), and I can put it up by myself in under 10 minutes. I couldn't get a decent picture out of it until about 10 minutes before sundown, but once it is dark, it is incredible.

This looks like it has pretty much the same hardware specs as the Mars Lite, which you can still find at a few Walmarts for $249 on clearance. Obligatory Brickseek [brickseek.com] link, the listing now says "New Open Box" but that's what I used to find and buy a new one in May.

The only major difference I see is that the Mars Lite has no true smart features, and the Mars II features Android 7.1. However, the Mars II does not have access to the full Google Play Store, but uses a much more limited app store called Aptoide.

FWIW the Mars Lite and a Chromecast is pretty handy. I keep mine plugged in most of the time and the USB port will power a Chromecast. For $250 I like it a lot.

You didn't post the price. Seems like clickbait if you list a discount but no price.

The display itself is nice, and decently bright, and the built in battery, auto focus and auto keystone are nice. However, one of the major features of the unit fails to perform and it's either a firmware issue or a device issue which others should be warned about before purchasing (or until a new firmware is released... unfortunately, I can't check since I can't get connected.)
