Best settings to compress a illustrator document for printing?

So whats the best way to compress a document that is going to be professionally printed?

Unfortunately i need to cut the size of some files down by about 1/2. One document i am working on is 80mb and needs to be about 1/2 that. The one i tried i didn't downsample anything but just compressed using the jpeg setting set to maximum. But the color on one section came out grainy.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Why do you need to compress it? Is it file transfer? There are file hosting solutions for that.

This is really a question your lab or printer service should be able to answer. Flattening the layers usually is a good method but make sure you have a backup of the original obviously.

I need to compress it because there is a maximum file size they will accept.

What resolution will it be printed at? The simplest thing you can do is export it as a PDF and set the DPI you want.

We the People of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

Why do conservative politicians oppose conservation?

Resize any pictures for how large they are in the book, that is usually where all the size comes.

Already set to that, but the file is still too big.

The file is already created to the exact measurements.
