So, if the SMART is wiped (I didn't even know that that could be done), how would you know if it has been used? I can run preclear, but that will only show if the drive is good.

as mentioned in prev threads, smartmontools and similar utilities can recover some of the wiped info, running surface tests will also reveal bad sectors that have been wiped from tables but are still truly bad

Wow! Just read the reviews for this seller: https://www.newegg.com/goHardDrive/about
Make sure to sort by "Lowest rated". Amazing stuff!

"Dear GoHardive,

I cannot say how displeased I am with your company. In my entire 20 years in I.T., I have never had a hard drive shipped to me in an "envelop" by means of USPS. No box, No bubble wrap, No protection. Just dropped the HD in an envelope and shipped.
What baffles me more, is that obviously you paid for PRIORITY MAIL. The boxes for this service are FREE and readily available at the post office!

I did not realize that the HD was coming from a third rate company. I thought we bought this from NewEgg.com.

I opened the dive to inspect. There are brown stains on the top of the casing… looks like rust? Or Coffee? For a "new drive", how did this happen??? This drive is NOT NEW. You are scamming."
