Picture Settings for the S401/403/405

For cable/satellite TV:

TV Brightness: Brighter
Picture Mode: Normal For Roku apps, use Vivid

Advanced Picture Settings:
Dynamic Contrast: high for Roku apps, turn off
Backlight: 100
Brightness 42
Contrast 100
Sharpness 66
Color 55
Tint 0
Color Temperature cool

Depending on your room, tweak from here. Some may prefer a normal color temperature to cool, but it will decrease the peak brightness and whites of the set.

Great TV for HDR gaming. Decent picture quality, but has great low input lag and can display fast moving content with very little blur. Supports HDR10 and has decent picture quality, but unfortunately can't produce a wide range of colors or get very bright. Lacks a local dimming feature to improve the dark scene performance
55" model dead? Now $369 (add to cart to see discount) Amazon Pm'ed $314 but now OOS.

I hate Walmart and their refurbs (lots and LOTS of experience). Returns can be torturous...

Having said that, These TCLs are the BEST TVs ever, especially if you're a cord cutter, meaning you have an over-the-air antenna for a few local channels and then the remainder of your programming is streaming.

In that case, the built-in Roku and accompanying SIMPLE remote are like heaven, on top of a sweet picture.

I bought the 43" version from Costco and was bummed when I unboxed and learned that it had no Ethernet port (this 55" in the OP does), but the wireless in the TCL was so FANTASTIC that I never missed it. I'm in a near 4,000 SF two-story home with a $15 wireless ASUS router that's 8-10 years old and the TV never burped once!

If TCL isn't the best value in HDTVs today, I'd love to see what is.

Highly recommended.

First the warning. Last year I tried to get in on the deal for a 55 inch TCL S405. They kept on trying to push a different 55 inch TCL, a crappier model, off as the S405. For this deal, make sure you get the S401. (Same but for cosmetics as S405)

Having said that, I love the TV. I have two 49 inch I use predominantly as stand off computer monitors.

I bought the S405 specifically because of price performance as a monitor. It's peak performance functions are as a video game monitor or PC monitor. It's not as good at movies.

Rtings.com gives detailed analysis of HDTVs.

The s405 series is only slightly below the rating of their top recommended HDTVs as monitors, and you only get the tiniest improvement from their more expensive pro/consumer models.

Apparently TCL has an app for their TVs which allows you to calibrate the monitor. Rtings says it comes well calibrated, but gives the screen a 10 after calibration. Seems a little complicated, though. I just set my tv to their recommended settings and didn't do the calibration.

I am on the fence. The last deal on eBay for a refurb received 5 thumbs up when it was $270. This is $20 more plus tax, but you can buy a 3 year warranty for $30. Decision Decision...

On the fence too. I'll wait and see if there's anything better tomorrow but if not, I'll jump on this deal.

How can you tell if it's a real S405 or not?

Great Deal OP - repped - a reminder - every credit card free extended warranty plan will not cover a refurbished. That is the main reason I stay away as Citi (and other cards) doubles original warranty.. but only on "new". But at this price with HDR I may make an exception and buy the Walmart coverage..

I got one of these -same model / size- for my mom from VIPOUTLET on eBay and she loves it. I think I paid $340 right before the lower prices started showing up. I'll probably wait another year or so before upgrading my own main set. Current set is a Vizio 2016 4k D-series. Plenty happy with it.
