Why was this a thumbs down??!! Is it the phone, or the price?

I don't know, I own the Pixel XL since day one, and it's the best phone I've ever used in my entire life, I've ordered the Pixel 2 XL and I canceled the order after I saw it at Verizon store, I didn't like the screen at all.
Just having the lifetime unlimited storage for all the photos and videos taken by the phone at the original quality makes this deal one of the best deals.

Is the unlimited storage from uploads using the original pixel or the Gmail account itself?

I like being able to pull my phone out of my pocket easily, and to put it back into my pocket..

Big phones are fine if you carry a purse or backpack everywhere, but i use my phone as a phone. Anything bigger than my Galaxy S7 is too big for me.

I like putting my phone in front pants pockets and at the time this was the most powerful phone in this size I could get and stay on Android. That said, while I love my Pixel, it's IS starting to slow down. Takes better pics than wife's iPhone 7 though.
