Safe to assume you are talking about a penguin/emperor? I would guess yes as these have some much nicer features and are built on a much newer design. Sicce makes some rather reliable pumps as well. These also self prime and will restart on their own in a power fail event. As well these will likely hold more media. Without looking up specs I can't guarantee that, however I ran emperor 400's for a long time and they didn't hold an abundant amount of media. Hopefully that helps?

Price wise these are tough to beat even for a backup. I'm replacing an AC 70 on a 29 with a tidal 110. Overkill for sure, but I was on a trip last week and had a power failure and trying to explain how to get it to restart to the wife was next to impossible, after about 45 minutes I told her where to find a spare air pump and move a sponge filter to keep things alive.

That said, per the seachem tidal website, you register it there and they give you a 5 year warranty to boot. That's pretty solid for a warranty on a filter.

Aside from the added media room and skimmer (which from reading the other site reviews can be noisy if you let the water dip below an inch or two) and odd decision to use blue parts on a black filter, I wonder how they compare to the Aqueon 55/70 (not LED) models in general (noise, efficiency, etc). And can the Aqueon Large filters be used in a pinch in the Tidal? I am in the market for a replacement and was just going to rebuy the Aqueon, but wanted some user opinions before I make a decision. It's for a 75gal reef. Thanks!

I believe the tidal is setup like a media basket like the aquaclears. Allowing you to load them up with media how you see fit. I'm not sure if the aqueon uses form fit media or cartridges?

I think it comes with matrix and a sponge. Usually just cleaning them suffices, then if you want to add chemical do so. That said my old Aquaclear 70 is super loud. I guarantee a new tidal 110 will be quieter. That and replacing the parts on an AC 70 costs about 2/3 as much as just buying an entire tidal.

Tidal 55 Amazon matched at $27 https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-l...dition=new

Seachem definitely puts out innovative, quality products and the 5 year warranty speaks for itself.

The tidal series is great, I had mine working on battery backup power. However, when I switched to (more expensive) cannister filter, I never looked back.

I don't care much for the filters but there are tons of 50-75% deals. I bought $400 worth of stuff. Thanks.
