Not knowing fully how Ai mesh works, if I have a an authentic ac68u, can I keep that one updated and run the mesh network? Or do both have to be in the same firmware version?

make sure your router's channels are not set within heavy traffic channels. Use wifi analyzer to determine the best channels. Also, i use channel 183 for 5.0GHz (i believe) and that's very stable.
On 2.4GHz, if you select channel 5, it uses channels 3-7. I find most success at channel 2 or 8.

I was losing connections prior to getting this router and changing channels, now everything stable as hell and never reset router. Also hacked and updated firmware to merlin.
