Good questions. I have owned the farpoint and the porter and now own the ozone.
Osprey packs are fabulous. I toured Europe extensively with the farpoint 40.
I never check bags ever.
Airlines are stricter in Europe regarding carry on bags. I flew several carriers with the farpoint 40 and though they weighed it a few times, I never had a problem as a carry on. Personal items are supposed to be much smaller and I doubt you would get away with it. I would never try the 55 even as a carry on as I suspect it would get caught and have to be checked and fees are steep at the gate. 55 would not fly as a personal item.
Plus, weight restrictions are often 8 kg or 10 kg and the 55 when full would likely be too heavy, also my 40 was heavy enough as it was. I walk miles daily with it when travel tho.

The porter has stiff walls, felt stiff against my back, and inadequate shoulder straps for carrying any distance imo. I returned it immediately.

Now I'm gonna take the ozone 46 to Europe. Its a lb lighter than these and not stiff at all (moulds to my back) and REI sales them for $90 at times. It does not seem as robust as the farpoint tho.

US airliners are right on the heels of European regarding restrictions and high baggage costs. Getting a bag which you don't have to worry about at every gate is worth the reduced stress and one time getting popped with $100 checked baggage fee will take all the fun out of it.

My advice: forget the 55 unless you plan to check it, get the farpoint (internal frame) or ozone (no frame, lighter) if you walk a lot with it, and the porter only if you don't walk much with your bag.

This is an excellent deal for a fantastic bag from Osprey, these are not made cheap.
I paid $175 for the farpoint and it was worth it. Props.

It's not publicly posted. I figure it out by continually adding more units to my cart until the website tells me that they don't have that many to sell to me at the moment.

Most people use this bag primarily for travel, not extended trail hiking. Hence its zip cover for the shoulder straps and hip belt, and being IATA carry-on size compliant. Is there a external frame backpack you would recommend that is carry-on sized?

thanks...looking for Farpoint 40L to go on sale for a while. Got 2.
The Osprey Farpoint 40L has much better reviews than the Osprey Porter 46.

I bought from them recently at this price. Their stock was running low, so I rushed my purchase to before my new credit card arrived. But they've recently restocked, now showing stock of >500 black M/L. Shipping progress so far has exceeded expectations for what is apparent trans-Atlantic.

Shipping seems great so far. It was tracked being in Miami on the 10th, and tendered to USPS much further north than there today.
Whats the difference between S/M vs M/L?

They have slightly different lengths to the pack's internal frame. It's so that people with shorter or longer torsos can wear the pack comfortably.

The S/M also happens to have a 38L capacity instead of 40L. But anyone who is not in the in-between range should decide which is size appropriate based on their torso length, not the difference in capacity or price.

Probably a stupid question...
Due to the knew carry on restrictions for airlines (unless you want to pay more), should I get the farpoint 40 or the 55?
I don't believe the 55 qualifies as a "personal item", but I have gotten away with using my brother's farpoint 40 as a "personal item".

Thoughts about the farpoint 55 as a personal item? Or would I just be pushing my luck at that point?

I thought around 46L was the airline limit. That is why Osprey is making the Osprey Porter 46.

55 is technically too tall. Some airlines may let it slide but you'd be taking a chance. I had it and found it too big for general travel and sold it. 55 does come with a detachable day pack which is nice.
