Can somebody tell me why you use dex instead of a computer if you still need all of the peripherals? Assuming you have a desktop too.

idk if I should get one.

Well it will make no sense if you have a computer there and such with internet... I use mine on the field if I don't have my laptop and I can connect to a monitor or a TV with HDMI for my PowerPoint

I was an early adopter of Dex and the S8. Unfortunately Dex messed up my software to where even when the phone was unplugged texts and calls would stop coming through. Samsung and Tmobile couldnt fix it so they gave me a new phone I tried again same issue. Eventually I got a 3rd replacement and just sold them and moved on.

I will say it was very cool to see the capabilities when it worked correctly. Just tread carefully, the issue could be resolved but its a huge issue if it is still occurring with people.

I wouldn't say that anyone should get one of these, but many moon ago I used to love connecting my phone to a docking station and using a monitor, full size keyboard and mouse. There are apps and games that I've used like that, that aren't available on my cpu where I might want this feature, but it's not a need. Definitely not for this price.

I'm very interested in this, but I need to know if I can run Samsung dex onto my 11.6" windows 2-1 and work from there?

Or does it have to be a monitor/tv only?

Also, would I be able to line up three apps at once on my screen, side by side by side? This would be a godsend for my multitasking needs...

if just two side by side it would be good too! (some apps aren't enabled for Samsung multi window/multi view).

TIA

No longer $57. There is an Amazon Warehouse listing for it that puts one at $47.59, as of this post. That's neat.

Edit: aaaand it's gone.

I hear you need a monitor with USB ports to connect your keyboard and mouse to use this properly or something?

For all you wondering, DEX is basically an evolved version of docking. You will still need a monitor, keyboard and mouse (unless you buy the touch pad version of dex). You connect it to ur phone and peripherals and you'll see a windows like desktop. you have short cut icons on desktop, task bar and all your apps come up in windows instead of taking the entire screen. it really looks like an android version of windows.

Just a couple of warnings though, some apps are not dex compatible and will not launch but i've only found one like this, Pokemon Go. Also, if your case is thick or the bottom isn't cut rt, then you might have trouble docking, but this is true with all plug in docks.

I use a DEXstation nearly every day with my Note 8. It's not a total desktop replacement, but it's pretty close. There are annoying little issues with every browser I've used (my favorite right now is MS Edge, although every now and then an update prevents it from running in DEX mode, only to be fixed in a subsequent release), some apps don't work fullscreen, even with the workarounds that are available. Many apps "pause" when you change focus to another app, so you can't necessarily watch a video in a small window while doing something else. So it's not a direct replacement for a standard desktop, but if you're like me and allowed to bring a personal phone into a tightly controlled office environment, but not a laptop, it's a great solution. It's nice to have your phone's messaging, dialer, etc all set up in a desktop environment.

I use a small 1" usb-c female to usb-c male adapter to allow me to use my note 8 in the DEX dock without taking the case off, but still get cooled by the fan.

You don't need a monitor with usb. You do, however, need a monitor with HDMI. In my case, I can't bring a decent monitor into my office, so I have to settle using an existing, crappy VGA monitor, but I was able to use a HDMI<>VGA adapter.

If you don't plug a mouse into the DEX station, it will activate your phone's screen into a "digitizer mouse pad," which works well. A usb keyboard is pretty much a must. A wireless keyboard and mouse combo is perfect.
