Williams Sonoma [williams-sonoma.com] has the Shun Classic 4-Piece Knife Block Set for $170. Shipping is free with promo code SHIP4FREE, otherwise free store pickup is available if stock permits.

4-Piece Set includes:
  • 3 1/2" Paring Knife
  • 4" Serrated Utility Knife
  • 6" Chef's Knife
  • 4-Slot Storage Block

Previous FrontPage deal for this was 6 months back when this dropped to $160. Typically sells in the $260-$380 range. The Chef knife alone goes for about $80 on sale.

These are a set of 3 VG-MAX knives. VG-MAX "super steel" blade is clad on each side with 34 microthin layers of stainless steel, creating a variegated look reminiscent of a Damascus-style blade. Exceedingly sharp cutting edges are long-lasting and easy to maintain. Durable PakkaWood handles resist moisture and have a D shape, to sit comfortably in the hand.

Includes bamboo storage block with 3 slots for blades and one slot for a honing steel.
NSF-certified knives meet high-level safety standards for professional kitchens.

Has anyone ever used these knives? If so are they worth the money?

Shuns chip pretty easy if you handle them poorly. They can last a while if you hand wash and cut with a decent technique.

Wonderful knives that cost quite a bit for the aesthetic value. Equally performing knives can be found for much cheaper prices (i.e. victronox knives) but they sure don't look as pretty!

Shun are considered high quality but I have never used this specific knife set. Personally it seems as a waste as the most useful knife is a 6" chef's knife which you most of the time want to have an 8" version of it. Considering that I would say it isn't worth $170 unless you are going for aesthetics which the wooden block does add to your kitchen.

That is a FANTASTIC deal for Shun knives. I already have an 11-piece set, but if I were to buy someone a less serious set, this deal is pretty hard to pass up. As noted before, these can chip if not handled properly. I've had to replace one of my knives, but then again, that's over the course of 10 years now. If you handle with care, you'll be fine. They are amazing.

Shun is part of KAI USA which also makes Kershaw and Zero Tolerance folding knives which are considered to be some of the best in the industry in terms of mass produced knives.
