Plex TV/DVR works with an OTA Antenna and TV tuner device to stream that content to other devices. It wouldn't be able to take the DirecTV content and use it. I

So off topic question.. What's the easiest way to DVR without paying the monthly DVR rental from the CATV provider? Other than Tivo?

Edit: tried to clarify my question.

Look up devices that use a cablecard. Some require subscription services (TV guide sort of thing) some might not. I don't have one myself so can't help much.

Thanks. I forgot about cable cards. Cox will charge me a few dollars /month for the cable card rental.

Depends on what your CATV provider charges for cable cards. The HDhomerun Prime is pretty much the only option. Each Prime takes a cablecard and wires to your network to provide 3 digital cable tuners. Alternative DVR software is available, but only Windows Media Center on Windows 7, 8, or 8.1 has the DRM system necessary to decrypt pay content like HBO. Newer CPUs don't support Windows 7-8.1, so you need a dedicated machine with an older CPU that still manages at least a 4000 passmark. Don't use Intel video either, there is a bug in their Windows 7 (and probably 8 and 8.1) drivers that screw up pay channels. HTH

It's funny how DVR has become the headline selling point of Plex Pass... seems like such a niche feature in this day and age. What are the other draws... sync? gpu transcode? local user accounts? What are non-DVR users buying Plex Pass for?

Even with as many benefits as Plex DVR as over Windows Media Center (what I was previously on) it still has a lot of rough edges. For example, if you drive fills up it will just fail recording everything until space becomes available. You can try to mitigate this by setting rules limiting the number of recordings for each show, or the number of days they're kept, but what it really needs is just a global rule to delete the oldest recordings when the drive fills up... like every other DVR solution.
