AMEX 20% Deal - Buy Safeway/Vons giftcards, use to buy Amazon GC in store

If you are trying to use the AMEX 20% off offer to buy Amazon gift cards but are disappointed that it doesn't work here's another way to go. First buy up to $500 in Safeway/Vons gift cards and use your AMEX point(s). This should get you the $100 off. I would have plastic gift cards mailed to you as I have had problems getting cashiers to use egift cards at the supermarket stores. Next take the Safeway/Vons gift cards and buy Amazon gift cards. This works - I have just done it. However I would not buy over $100 at a time or the cashier may get nervous and refuse to put the order through. Then you would have to get the manager involved and turn this into a big hassle. Just do the purchases slowly and you will eventually get $500 in Amazon cards for $400.

Self checkout has been eliminated at Vons, don't know about Safeway

This could work even better by waiting for a Safeway "Just For U" 10X Gas Rewards points promotion on Amazon gift cards at Safeway. They don't come around that often, but they usually show up around the Thanksgiving/Christmas holidays.

So, if you buy $500 worth of Amazon gift cards during a "Just For U" 10X points promotion with your newly acquired Safeway gift cards, then you get 50 Gas Rewards where each reward will you save $1/gallon. That's another $50 saved for your efforts!

Big YMMV, though!! You might not get Gas Reward points when using a Safeway gift card to purchase an Amazon gift card. It is unclear in their terms. Can anyone confirm this?

Just buy 1 Safeway $100 GC and $400 of Amazon GCs.
YMMV on buying GCs with Safeway GC, it depends if the cashier will let you do it.

This would give you only a $20 reduction. Amazon gift cards bought at Amazon do not count towards the 20% reduction

You get the full $100 reduction if you buy it all in 1 order from Amazon.

I added $500 worth of Safeway cards. (Sold by Amazon). 5x$100

Went to check out and applied my 1 Membership point.

But the "pay" button greyed out on me and wouldn't let me complete transaction.

If I set to not use points, then the option to pay is back.

Any ideas?

I did this just last week and it worked (4x $100 Safeway and 1x $100 Lowe's), got the full $100 discount and already received the gift cards.

Good to know. The Safeway e-GC I got from Amazon specifically says can't use it to buy gift cards. So it sounds more like whether the cashier allows it.
