OK, been using AAA for this the past few years but this year they raised the price for the Plus package from 78 to 93 dollars. Can anyone recommend a decent package in the NJ area that will tow a car 50-100 miles if need be?

Check your car insurance policy to see what they offer.

Car is 9 years old. My insurance only offers a $50 reimbursement for towing to the nearest facility for $2 a year. Not even worth the $2 imo.

I was looking at AARP, but they seem to want to pepper you with their magazine subscription junk mail (and probably sell your address to other companies for more junk mail). Who gets snail mail magazine subscriptions these days? I have not bought a newspaper or a magazine in probably something like 15+ years.

the only reason I keep my AAA plus (in NY) is also for the 100 mile towing, if I am upstate and get stuck, I can get towed back to the city for the price of a phone call... Have not ever known of another subscription roadside service that does this, but would love to find one thats less too...
all the insurance and car dealers offer is to the nearest garage, which isnt as helpful if you are frequently 50+ miles away from home.

AARP does as well and is a little cheaper though almost effectively the same after you factor in their membership fee in AARP itself. Still do not know if it is worth switching as AARP is notorious for sending you junk mail and selling your info to other spammers. It is just ridiculous imo to pay $93 a year for something that is almost never used. I have used it once in roughly 10 years when my battery died and they came and gave me a jump. At $93 a year, it probably is cheaper in the long run to just roll the dice and pay for a tow yourself if you need it. There prices are just way out of control right now imo.

How many times have you had to get the car towed that far? And in all those times, was the car being well maintained? Was the car still reliable at the time of stranding? Was the car under 150K miles? 150K miles given as a reference point b/c many modern cars that are well maintained should easily get to 150K miles.

As Post #6 says, it maybe cheaper/better to just roll the dice.

Do you have a truck or a good friend/family member w/ a truck? If so, this could be an inconvenient work around. Rent a vehicle tow dolly or trailer, to bring your vehicle back home.
