Thanks and repped for posting the deal, Suryasis. hug

Planning to get this one for programming / dev and wondering what's your take on it. Obviously, Thinkpads will be much better but how does this one compare against the solid Dell Inspiron 700 series.

We have a Dell Inspiron 7548 that we got in 2015 and are extremely impressed with. We just had to install an SSD.

It does have touch screen which this IdeaPad doesn't but that is not a deal killer. And this IdeaPad has IPS screen, right?

Would appreciate your thoughts. Thank you. Peace

I believe the ideapad 330 models don't have IPS displays. The 330S models do, though.

Hmm...
This or the Acer 15 that I bought on Prime Day?

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product...UTF8&psc=1

I am looking specifically for a 15" 2 in 1 with a minimum 256GB SSD and was hoping for discrete graphics.

Acer- i7 7500U, 12GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 940MX, no media drive $650
Lenovo - i5 8250U, 8GB RAM, 256GB, Intel UHD, DVDRW $500

I guess it may all come down to what I'm going to use it for but I'm leaning toward keeping the Acer due to the RAM and 940MX. All thoughts appreciated.

Don't use these Laptops for any editing work which needs higher color gamut .

You paid too much for the old hardware in Acer.

Thanks Suryasis. I guess I should have clarified as well, trying to keep it around 700 and wasn't finding anything with over 8GB RAM and discrete graphics. Everything I saw was closer to the 900-1000 range. If I overpaid I guess I will return it and keep looking.

Not the case at all. 7th Gen to 8th Gen is less than 10% performance gain over all. I'd save the cash if you don't need the graphics horsepower, but the Acer is a 2-in-1, correct?

There were plenty deals at your budget of 800 bucks satisfying your requirements, especially if you consider Normal laptops as well. I have posted myself couple here.

The Laptop you purchased, has 7th Gen dual core CPU and graphics card of previous Maxwell generation from Nvidia. You should look for 8th Gen i5 or i7 U series, which are quad core. For graphics, I would say, at least MX150... Based on latest Pascal architecture from Nvidia.

Thanks both to you and 12pac. You have both been very helpful (apologies if I have derailed the original deal thread - don't mean to)

12pac - Yes the Acer is a 2 in 1.

I think the crux of my issue (as it is with most people) - is that I want a lot for a little bit of money with very specific wishes.
- My wife absolutely wanted a 2 in 1. If it wasn't for that, I think my options would open up a LOT.
- She also wanted a 15" form factor. Again, that really limits options for 2 in 1s because most are around 13".
- I wanted more than 8GB RAM
- Some sort of discrete graphics would be nice.
- SSD Boot
- (Oh and no refurb...)

I originally had spec'd an i5 8th gen or a more recent incarnation of an i7. What I was finding for most options with those specs you start around $800 and easily go up to 1200+. I really liked the Yoga 730 but again, that was 1200 then after coupons and cashback, maybe 1000-1100 total. The street price for the Acer I found is around 750-799, and on Prime Day was 649.

On the downside, older i7, older discrete graphics (I guess mid-2017 was when that came out?).

On the plus side, 12GB RAM, SSD (although smallish and I will need to add/upgrade - maybe when Black Friday rolls around given the SSD deals we're starting to see).

So that's been my line of reasoning. The TLDR is cheaper and older or newer and a little more expensive. For some people, an extra $200-$300 is not a big stretch to get some extra longevity. I guess for someone like me where closer to $700 is reaching the ceiling and you have very specific ideas of what you want these decisions get harder.

BTW - I appreciate everyone's input and I will look for your posts Suryasis.

PS- Oh man, I was studying this deal and realized it is not a 2 in 1. Duh, I can be so dumb, no wonder all the comments about regular laptops vs 2 in 1s. When I saw IdeaPad I jumped to the conclusion that it was a 2 in 1. So dense sometimes.

So is this an IPS display or not? If so, then this is a great deal
