Some of the more recent reviews for this brand scares me. With so many women complaining that it made them sick to their stomachs, I really don't know if it's safe to ingest. The ones that give highest reviews, apparently they did that so they could win some type of prize. Anyways, I purchased this, but then cancelled it. Has anyone taken these and if so, what did you think of these?

My wife has taken them for the entire pregnancy of our fourth child and still takes them. He's almost a year old now. We bought them, as the ingredients appear to be of much higher quality than most other prenatals.

My wife is currently taking folic acid (as she has through our first four children). Is there a reason to take this as well? Is there a point in the pregnancy where there is no point in taking these anymore?

I have heard good things about the Zahler brand.

Healthcare professionals recommends prenatals before and during pregnancy for women of child-bearing age. Pregnancy taxes your body of vital nutrients, and prenatal vitamins help ensure optimal levels. Even after the baby is born, postnatal vitamins help replenish nutrients lost and support milk supply/quality.

Seems like they recently changed the ingredients. Folic acid is used instead of folate which is the better form.

folic acid is different than a multivitamin or DHA ... DHA in pregnancy does appear to have benefits for children's brain development and duration of gestation in many studies. If we had more kids I'd get my wife to eat more fish and take a multivitamin as a safety net to fill any gaps in the diet.

As for when it's important I'd say probably throughout pregnancy, maybe most important early on but certain minerals and vitamins appear to be important throughout pregnancy.

Pharmacist here. Whenever I think of supplements I always tell people to look for something that is USP certified. The brand doesn't really matter too much just look for that certification. Supplements are, unfortunately, not regulated at all so the USP is an independent verification that manufacturers of supplements apply to get certified. Basically they are verifying that what the label says is in the supplement is in there and in the amount that is on the bottle. Otherwise manufacturers could be selling, and sometimes do sell, expensive cellulose tablets. Because they aren't held accountable on a basis of purity and safety.

Here's a list of several USP certified products.
