Its not definitely a big difference... depends on what you are doing with it and exactly what models you are comparing.
For instance, moving to a processor with more cores, which is available in 8th generation, might give you a 10% performance boost if your application uses all the cores and threads. However, most people, especially at $299 level, are not using applications that this will matter.
Don't get me wrong, not saying you are incorrect...just that it only makes a big difference to a some people.
