Got this for 6 on a psn sale. Its a pretty generic dungeon crawler with the dumbest story ever but the combat system is a hybrid tactical and traditional which is cool enough to keep me playing.

I've tried and tried to get into these JRPG anime games but just can't - the dialog and cutscenes especially on the Neptunia games is infuriatingly asinine so the trade off is either I don't care what I'm playing the game for and skip it all or sit through it and give up playing after an hour or two and shelve it forever.

I love anime and jrpgs but I agree here. Its fun for awhile, but soon I find myself just trying to get to the end to finish the game. There's a lot of funny stuff in between though.

Yea, neptunia can be a turn off if you're not familiar with jrpg or anime in general. There are a lot of jokes that requires you to have knowledge of certain anime genres and so on. I won't recommend neptunia to someone starting a jrpg.

If you want to try one, you should go with more mainstream jrpg such as final Fantasy, tales of series, star ocean, bravely default/second, the recently released octopath traveler.

Those I mentioned are highly rated and should be easier for people to get into jrpg. I mostly mentioned titles you can find in newer consoles. Of course if you'd like to venture into ps2 or ps1 territory, I got some suggestions there too.

I agree. These games aren't for kids yet they are still so childish and lame. I guess it's cheaper to have a few writers come up with whatever random crap pops up in their head than have a group of decent writers have long brainstorming sessions to come up with a coherent story and dialogue? You can't really blame them. Otakus and weeaboos will eat this stuff up no matter what, so why put more effort than you need to?

Luckily, quality JRPGs (that AREN'T named Final Fantasy, Tales, etc) are still being made but you sometimes to have sort through a lot of manchild games to find them. They also rarely go on sale for this price ($3.89) unless the game is really, really old. =(

I do recommend mainstream jrpg like final Fantasy and tales to my friends who wanted to try jrpg genre though. It's more popular and is easier for people to get into than most other jrpgs.
NISA jrpgs are also good, like disgaea and atelier series, but tends to be more niche than FF or tales.
Of course there's Marvelous Inc with their senran kagura or Atlus with their persona, but tbh those are also a bit harder to get into as first jrpg.
Of them idea factory is the hardest to get into for first timer.

So yea, altho it sounds mainstream I would recommend square Enix released titles like FF, bravelies, star ocean, I am setsuna, or even the chronos. Or of course the most mainstream of all... Kingdom hearts. Which... I won't recommend to newcomer due to the long and convoluted back story of the franchise.

Out of curiosity, what would you recommend that isn't named final fantasy or tales of games? The only other thing I've been looking at recently in this particular genre is ni no kuni. Although, I'll be frank, the animation on this one has made me hesitant to pick up at a high price.
