actually the exact opposite happened. JCP used to relied on insane coupons and laughable MSRP to attract customer. JCP then hired apple senior vice president Ron Johnson to run their business in 2011, who strongly against this business model and believed in a full but fair price (like apple). however, this eliminated the thrill of pursuing markdowns, and disenfranchised JC Penney's traditional customer base. within a year, the store sales dropped by 32%, which led to the worse quarter in retail history. Ron is then fired the following year.

know some history doesn't hurt, don't know your customer base will hurt.

Random in general, not random for the post. Most people wouldn't know that information about JCPenney is all I am saying. I would never have expected someone would have history working for Apple and JCP. I just thought it was an interesting and unusual story.

Wait, why is the coffee pot $9.99, if it's already $16.99 after coupon, then you get the $10 rebate? What am I missing?

Interesting story about the VP and sales strategy. I've hated how jcp's has been going the way of kohls lately, with super high "original prices" to make it seem like unbeleivable sales when you stack credit card percents off etc.

They've even started doing kohl's lotto ticket discount, where you scratch off to see how much additional percentage you get. I don't care for it, but apparently most people do if they started tanking when going back to more straightforward honest strategy.
